Write a reaction to the following modern jazz-influenced popular (and one old R&B) selections:
(DESCRIBE WHAT YOU HEAR, THEN YOUR EMOTIONAL REACTION TO IT)
I am interested in your personal observations and associations: what do you hear?
Does not need to be expert testimony. Some further ideas for your listening:
After starting with the instruments that you hear, then try to ascertain more how they are being used (in a group of like instruments? As a solo instrument? Performing the melody? Or as a background behind the main melody?).
Then move on to other musical elements: tempo, volume, energy. What is the mood of the piece? What effect are the performers trying to achieve? Who are their target audiences?
1. US3 – CANTALOOP:
2. GURU – LOUNGIN´
3. CISSY STRUT – JOHN SCOFIELD
Note: This song was performed originally by the Meters in 1969 a New Orleans-based rhythm and blues/funk band who are well-known for their deep, funky New Orleans grooves. React to the jazz version, then listen to the original and react to that one.
4. CISSY STRUT – THE METERS (1969 original)
5. POWER – MARCUS MILLER (bandleader/bassist)
6. SPAIN – CHICK COREA (bandleader/keyboards)
Then watch the performance from the beginning:
Write just one reaction but include some thoughts on Corea´s playing
