My reflection on the overall process of developing a criminal justice initiative to address a problem, finding a solution and writing a grant proposal is that it takes a lot of time, however, can be rewarding. Knowing that you are trying to help the community by bettering the criminal justice system is something that needs to continue to be done. In Harrisburg gun violence is continuing and it will most likely get worse over the summer. We need change and writing about something you’re passionate about is helpful.
One personal strength that helped me during this process is my time management. Writing a grant proposal takes a lot of time and research. Since I was able to plan out my time wisely the process went well. One area of personal growth was understanding that there are many opportunities for funding however taking the time to get community buy in is most difficult. Everyone can want change, however, if people don’t want to buy into the process it won’t work. Overall this was definitely a learning process.

I have come to realize a lot about the process of grant writing and about individual criminal justice topics. I have taken a deep dive into subjects that interest me before and learned a lot about them. However, preparing a plan to help I feel has made me learn so much more about the topic and about how to start the process of what I view as a positive change.
One personal strength that I found throughout this process was how much I would focus on something that I found important. I chose to research and address the spike of domestic violence that happened right around the time that most of the nation locked down due to coronavirus and I found it really important and shocking and it really made me focus and care about this issue that I didn’t really have much prior knowledge about.
One area I feel like I have realized I need to work on and grow my knowledge of is finding ways to actually solve problems. I feel as if I’ll see a statistic or an article about a problem related to criminal justice and I’ll acknowledge it as an issue and that it needs to be solved but not spend much time actually thinking of the logistics on how to solve the problem. After learning more about the fine details that need to be worked out to solve these issues, I have grown a lot but still can improve much more in regard to working on solutions to criminal justice issues.
