Information seeking is often treated as a synonym for information retrieval (IR) to emphasize the active role the user takes in the IR process. Scholarly studies on information seeking are on the rise; however, those studies are criticized for their artificiality because they typically are carried out in an artificial environment. Citing related literature, discuss what can be done to minimize the artificiality of research on information seeking.
