This assignment is for my Quality and Safety in healthcare class. It is a reflective paper where we add our thoughts on the matter.
Some of my thoughts are that his case highlights the importance of patient-centered care. There were so many red flags that should have been addressed. The family was ignored, doctors were not available, did not check in on the patient after surgery. The nurses and residents did not check vital signs properly, there was a lack of communication.
I believe that if one nurse or staff member advocated for Lewis and his mom then he might still be alive and be 37 right now with a family. He sounded like a bright young kid that had a bright future that was taken away due to a series of medical errors. this Sentiment event was avoidable if one person took the time to evaluate his vitals and listen to him and his mother.
