Building on Phillipe Bourgois’ “Poverty at Work” and Karen Sacks’ “How Jews Beca

Building on Phillipe Bourgois’ “Poverty at Work” and Karen Sacks’ “How Jews Became White Folk”: In what ways is race constituted “beyond phenotype”? What role do political, economic, and/or educational institutions play in developing or shoring up these hierarchies? How can we see this play out in the present day?
PROMPT:
Building on Phillipe Bourgois’ “Poverty at Work” and Karen Sacks’ “How Jews Became White Folk”:
· A – In what ways is race constituted “beyond phenotype”?
· B – What role do political, economic, and/or educational institutions/policies/forces play in developing or shoring up these hierarchies?
· C – How can we see this play out in the present day?
CRITERIA/SUGGESTIONS
· I am looking for you to engage with Bourgois’ and Sacks’ articles ad you create your own argument replying to: “In what ways is race constituted beyond phenotype?” Your thesis should be clear and identifiable.
· I recommend you organize the body of your essay around the second question in the prompt: “What role do political, economic, and/or educational institutions, policies, or forces play in developing or shoring up racial hierarchies?”
· Try to use the course readings to illustrate your point. However, I am really interested in your argument… only summarize what is necessary to understand the specific thought you are trying to convey.
· The third component “How can we see this play out the present day?” asks you to really synthesize and apply. You can bring this into (for example) a final body paragraph and/or the conclusion.
· Finally, unlike the last essay, try to stick to 3rd person for the majority of the essay — it is implicit that what you are writing is your opinion along the way 🙂
